Our Story
Russian is often seen as one of the most challenging languages to learn — a mysterious world of Cyrillic letters, shifting cases, and unfamiliar sounds. We understand the struggle because we’ve been there ourselves.
Russkiy Online started in 2023 as a small language blog. The founder, Alexei Volkov, a Russian-American linguist and polyglot who grew up in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, noticed a gap: Russian learning materials available online were either too academic, outdated, or simply not designed for the busy, multicultural learners of New York. Most resources also ignored the warmth and humor of Russian culture.
What began as a few grammar tip posts shared among friends and Russian heritage learners quickly turned into a vibrant community. Readers asked for more — structured lessons, pronunciation help, cultural insights. Today, Russkiy Online is a full-fledged learning platform where students from Manhattan, Queens, and across the United States (and beyond) come to study Russian in a fresh, practical, and encouraging way.
We combine modern teaching methods with genuine cultural immersion. We explain the “why” behind every case, share stories from real Russians (and Russian New Yorkers), and celebrate every small victory — like reading your first street sign in Brighton Beach or ordering borscht at a Russian café without switching to English.
Our Mission
To bridge the language gap between the Russian-speaking world and the global community by providing high-quality, affordable, and culturally rich Russian language education — while fostering mutual understanding and lifelong curiosity. We especially aim to serve the diverse neighborhoods of New York City, where Russian language and culture are a vibrant part of daily life.
Meet the People Behind Russkiy Online
👤 Alexei Volkov – Founder & Lead Instructor
A Russian language graduate from NYU with over 7 years of teaching experience. Alexei has lived in Saint Petersburg and Moscow, and now calls Brooklyn home. He has a knack for turning complex grammar into lightbulb moments, and is also a tea enthusiast and literature nerd who can recite Pushkin by heart. When not teaching, he’s hunting down the best pelmeni in Sheepshead Bay.
👤 Maria “Masha” Petrova – Cultural Content Creator & Native Speaker
Born in Yekaterinburg, Masha moved to New York a decade ago and brings the real Russia to our blog and videos — from babushka’s kitchen secrets to modern slang from both Moscow and Brighton Beach. She records all native audio and ensures you learn the Russian people actually speak, blending authenticity with a New Yorker’s edge.
👤 David Chen – Community & Support Manager
A lifelong New Yorker and heritage Russian learner from Queens, David is the friendly voice behind your emails and the person who makes sure every question gets answered. He coordinates student activities, manages our social media, and keeps the team fueled on coffee from the local Russian bakery.

What Makes Us Different
-
Culture First, Grammar Second: Language is a living thing. Each lesson we create is wrapped in cultural context — you’ll learn how to use words, not just what they mean. Our examples might just feature New York landmarks alongside Red Square.
-
Designed for English Speakers, Rooted in NYC’s Diversity: We pay special attention to the challenges learners from non-Slavic language backgrounds face (cases, verb aspects, pronunciation pitfalls), while embracing the mix of heritage speakers, total beginners, and curious New Yorkers that make up our community.
-
Flexible Learning Paths: From the free zone to deep-dive courses, you choose your pace and depth. Attend in-person meetups in Manhattan or learn entirely online.
-
Community & Support: Join our discussion groups, submit questions, and practice with fellow learners. You’re never studying alone — whether you’re in New York, New Jersey, or anywhere else.
-
Continuous Improvement: We update our materials regularly based on student feedback. This platform grows with you.
